Siddhartha Gautama, known as the Buddha, was a spiritual leader and the founder of Buddhism. Born into a royal family in what is now Nepal around the 5th or 6th century BC, he first lived a sheltered life of luxury. After being confronted with the suffering of the world, he left his palace to seek the causes of human suffering. After years of ascetic practices and meditation, he achieved enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. His teachings, aimed at overcoming suffering and achieving Nirvana, include the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. Buddha's teachings are the core of Buddhism.
